Over the course of English 110 I have learned how to incorporate quote from other authors as evidence in my writing.  At the beginning of the semester, I struggled with transitioning into a quote and explaining it. I feel that I have learned how to do this throughout the semester. This is shown in my significant writing piece about blending art and science. For example, in my essay I write “Yo-Yo Ma writes in his essay “Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” that ‘To be able to put oneself in another’s shoes without prejudgment is an essential skill. Empathy comes when you understand something deeply through arts and literature and can thus make unexpected connections. These parallels bring you closer to things that would otherwise seem far away.’ He is saying that in order to connect ourselves with the world around us, we need to be able to put ourselves in the lives of others and see things through their eyes.” This shows how I am able to introduce a quote and its author and then explain what it means so that it flows nicely with the rest of my writing. It also shows that I am able to support my claims using evidence from other sources. By mastering this skill, I am able to produce stronger works of writing that convey my ideas in a coherent manner.
